Become an AmeriCorps Member
AmeriCorps members are neither employees nor volunteers. They provide one or two years of service to their communities in exchange for a modest living allowance and an education award.
YATC members are full-time and complete 1,700 hours of service in one year.
Target members of YATC are college students and recent college graduates. However, we welcome people of all ages and backgrounds who would like to contribute to their community.
What are the benefits of becoming an AmeriCorps member?
In exchange for one or two years of service to their community, members receive a modest living allowance. Members will not get rich, but many find that it will cover most monthly expenses.
Members also receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 to pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans. In addition, members are eligible for other benefits such as health insurance, student loan forbearance, and childcare.
But perhaps the biggest benefit members receive from service in AmeriCorps is the satisfaction that comes with giving back to one’s community and making a difference in the lives of those they serve. Furthermore, members learn communication and teamwork skills that will make a difference in future careers.
What do YATC members do?
Young Adult Transition Corps (YATC) members engage youth with disabilities, or participants (approx. ages 16-24), in service learning projects and other programs that focus on transition from school to adult life, building social connections, and orienting people with disabilities to community life. Members provide direct service to participants, as well as plan and coordinate community service projects and special events. Members also participate in ongoing training and development as a corps.
Will becoming a YATC member affect my Social Security benefits?
Service in AmeriCorps can affect Social Security benefits. However, it is best to look at each case individually. If you have concerns related to your benefits, please contact Jillian Ober at 614.247.6392.
