P.A.L.S.
Partners Achieving Learning and Support:
A support group for young adults with Down syndrome
Program Description
P.A.L.S. is a support group for young adults with Down syndrome, giving group members an opportunity to express some of their thoughts and feelings in a safe environment where they can be supported by others with similar experiences. Each week members discuss important transition topics including social skills, work exploration, friendships, and conflict resolution.
The purpose of P.A.L.S. is to provide members with skills and knowledge that will assist them as they transition to adult life. Members are encouraged to play an active role in this transition and to consider and establish educational, employment, and socialization goals for their future. Additionally, members may be more inclined to share their thoughts and feelings with others and to nurture healthy relationships.
P.A.L.S. is discussion-based group. While meetings often involve some fun activities upon which to base a discussion, P.A.L.S. is designed to be unique from most recreational activities typically available to young adults with Down syndrome. The focus of P.A.L.S. remains on the social and emotional needs of the members. Each session is devoted to a different discussion topic, such as family, work, relationships and dating, expressing empathy, and transition to adulthood.
